Exponential Growth In Oslo Startup Scene

Hardly a day goes by without 2-3 future/startups/tech related events are being held here in Oslo. Not only that but coworking spaces keep popping up EVERYWHERE. Huge conferences are arranged and people are even mapping the startup communities in books here. Pretty crazy. And now, this TV and socialtainment concept Office X is going mainstream. To me, that says a LOT about Norway and where we are heading. I'm amazed. It's such a difference from when I first entered the startup scene a few years back, really, I had to leave for The Bay Area to enter a real startup community. But.. Now, It's like we woke up from years of sleep in a cave and when we first woke up we got really really excited and now its running around trying to learn everything. We fail and we succeed, every day feels like a completely new journey And best of all, I feel nation wise that we are togehter, I feel more community amongst people now than ever its really minimal but I can see things are changing, slowly but steady.

I just had to write this cause I'm so amazed of how rapid the movement are hitting us as a positive wave. Even though the future might be scary, if we stick together it's less so.

The country I once fled away from is surprisingly enough becoming a country I'd like to spend time in. Oslo and California. Right Now, best places on earth.

Let's keep up the good work Norway <3

Silicon Valley’s Secret Sauce: Montessori

All of Silicon Valley's most successful businessmen/women has one thing in common: their Montessori educational background. To me it seems like it's the best offer to learn and grow in the best way possible. I'm so envious. I've always been envious of people growing up in California especially on those in The Bay Area. The weather, the culture, the mentality and even the schools are better. Why the heck was I born in Norway? Where is that logic from? Well. Can't do anything about it. I'd like to see my future kids to grow up there though. I'm not sure that will ever be a possibility but.. I'll keep hoping. Meanwhile it's good to know that there are other opportunities cause the Montessori school is found here in Oslo as well.

But what is Montessori?

The Montessori is a school you can attend from a toddler age throughout high school.
Wikipedia describes it like this "The Montessori education is a system of education for young children that seeks to develop natural interests and activities rather than use formal teaching methods."

It is specialized to follow the kids natural curiosity and learn from there. Every child is unique and thus the education is.  The education has seven pillars of self-directed learning:

1. Independence
2. Responsibility
3. Self-Discipline
4. Leadership
5. Initiative
6. Academics
7. Lifelong Learning

So.. There most be something to it when all of the examples mentioned below are Montessori graduates.

  • Larry Page and Sergei Brin, the founders of Google
  • Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon
  • Will Wright, the inventor of best-selling video games series “The Sims”
  • Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia
  • Thomas Edison, the American inventor
  • Other prominent people who went through Montessori education include Taylor Swift and Beyonce Knowles, celloist Yo-Yo Ma, legendary management guru Peter Drucker, actor George Clooney, illusionist David Blaine, author Helen Keller, techno-philosopher Jason Silva and English royals Prince William and Prince Harry.

Below is a describing video of difference between conventional school and the Montessori.
It's such genius that it should've been embraced by the whole wide world long time ago.

If you want to dig deeper into the story behind it here is a documentary about the amazing woman behind the concept.

Week In Review - April 23nd

This week F8 2017, the Facebook Developer Conference. At the event, CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed key details about where the company is going next, specifically focusing on what Facebook is working on in relation to bots, virtual reality, augmented reality, and new communication methods (such as advances they are working on in Messenger).. I've always been wanting to go there... Perhaps in a few years?
On my side the pre-work week took place and we moved in to our office at Skøyen. It starts looking like something but we are looking for decorations, so if you have any idea or stuff you'd like to show the world - come by!

The F8 conference got kicked off by this keynote by Mark Zuckerberg. Wort watching. At least for the first 20 minutes.

If you just read one thing of this sum up read this on by Tim Urban on Brain computer interference "Neuralink and the brains magical future" . Whenever Tim Urban comes out with a new post I scream halleluja. He has some great insights on tech and future society and in his blogposts he explains complex things in an easily graspable way. Highly recommend you to check his blog out and read the parts describing the AI Revolution, Elon Musk and The Fermi Paradox. Apparently Elon likes him too.

VR/AR

Facebook launched Facebook Spaces, a social virtual reality platform. You can go, teleport and do anything anywhere with you friends! Woho. Magic is here!

Both Snapchat and Facebook did a launch this week on their new augmented reality feature. Snapchat has released it for the mainstream while Facebooks version is still in Beta trial. But Im not in doubt of which version I can't wait to be using.

Check out the difference:

HEALTH AND MEDICINE

A New “CRISPR Pill” Makes Bacteria Destroy Its Own DNA
Many people have been talking for ages about the anxiety of antibiotics resistance. I've had this inner feeling that it wont be a problem cause we will have so much knowledge in biotechnology that we will find a better way to solve it. And now it seems that we are almost spot on to something thats even better. Yes you hear me, it's better than antibiotics!
CRISPR, the most advanced gene editing technique of today, is used and a Food scientist is creating this probiotic cocktail that can be swallowed as liquid or as a pill.
In depth: The cocktail of bacteria will include a bacteriophage – a virus that infects bacteria – capable of carrying a customized, false, CRISPR message to C. difficile. This message would cause C. difficile to make lethal cuts to its own DNA.

Google's Health Study Seeks 10,000 Volunteers to Give Up Their Medical Secrets.
Google is about to start of the most comprehensive study ever done in history being used to research disease and how to cure it. Google <3
“No one has done this kind of deep dive on so many individuals. This depth has never been attempted,” says Sanjiv Sam Gambhir, a physician researcher at Stanford University who is one of Baseline’s investigators. “It’s to enable generations to come to mine it, to ask questions, without presupposing what the questions are.”

SPACE

Well, soon we can easily just 3D print our house when we get to Mars in no time. All we have to do is use the Martian dust and bring a machine.

Scientists Just Discovered an Alien Planet That’s The Best Candidate for Life As We Know It
"
Only a few decades ago, the thought of any alien planets existing in the reaches of space were just hypothetical  ideas. Now, we know of thousands of such planets – and today, scientists may have discovered the best candidate yet for alien life."
YES! The Fermiparadox is just why we haven't found anyone to communicate with. BUT there is this one thing far far away trying to communicate with us or something is happening that in unexplainable. You can read more about that venture here. I believe they are there we just haven't figured out a way to find them yet. An possibly they dont even look like we expect. They probably merged with machines long time ago and might just like like atoms that can turn themselves into anything whenever they want. Well, I'll stop right here with the far out thoughts of mine.

ENHANCED HUMANS

Zuckerberg: Facebook Is Working on a Brain Interface That Lets You “Communicate Using Only Your Mind”

Already back a few years ago I heard that Facebook was deep into AI and neuralnets and was working on some brain computer interface where you actually can communicate with your peers by just thinking. And.. Soon.. you can update your FB status by pure thought. Like the old fashioned telepathy. Which many people refuse to believe in.
But well, we're almost there technology wise.

And yes.. Btw, our last interviewer and final decision maker was The Prime Minister of Norway, Erna Solberg. How crazy is that? Pretty absurd if you ask me. So the the interviewing process was heavy enough with the CEO of NHO and Visma and so on. I'm flattered that I manage to stick through. It was heavy..!

Relax

A friend of mine recently wrote me about how stressed and overworked she felt, she argued she had no time for her self, no time to do what she really wanted to do and no time at all to simply relax. Even though she was doing a lot of fun things she didn't feel joyful about it and didn't appreciate nor feel gratitude for any of it, all she could think of was how much she felt that her head was under deep water and how much misery she felt from within. Not only that but she constantly suffers from ear infections and urinary tract infections. Coincidence?
I asked her what she would want to do then instead? She told me that all she want is to have time to prioritise herself. That's all she wanted. Well, thats rather weird. You see, this girl doesn't have a bunch of kids to feed, she has no family to take care of, she has no obligations in life, at all. Not one responsibility she doesn't design herself. She even has plenty of money. How come this is her situation then? How come a person who has all the opportunities in the world to create the life she really would enjoy and value live in such distress?

I can't believe my ears when I hear such stories like this but this is not a foreign concept for neither you nor society I'm sure of. This is the most disgusting disease, if I may call, running it around in the streets of our decade and filling up our hospitals. Stress. STRESS. S.T.R.E.S.S. Everywhere. Why?
Why? When we have all we need! Which is food, warm clothes and a roof above our head.

Yes, it's often in the news and media. They write about how much inner stress and external pressure people feel and that there is not enough time to breath. Even cancer can develop from the hormones within our body. Cortisol is dangerous. And our pharmacies nearly exist because of our neurotic behaviour outcome.

So we all should avoid this chaotic tension. Yes, we know that. But why don't we do much about it? Why don't we change our habits and thought patterns instantly while learning how our lifestyle and thoughts affect our wellbeing and our mental abilities and physical function? It should be so easy? But it seem like its just as we know what is healthy food but yet we like eating candy and continues to do so?
Emotional intelligence, EQ should be on the menu in the educational system all day long. How to be human, how to enjoy life, how do deal with your thoughts and feelings basically. How to change patterns and think healthy. This should all be taught over and over again in school. It's a joke that it isn't already long time ago.
I came across the other day that the governments strategy for youth health from 2016-2021 is now about getting emotional intelligence into the subjects in school.  Wow! It is working, slowly but steady.

All I want to say is for those of you that feel like my friend, or knows someone who might feel that way, perhaps a child, your parent.. Reach out and say..
I know what you are feeling, but remember, life is about enjoying yourself. Do what makes you smile and laugh and feel good about yourself. Its your life, you can create your own. Do not focus on what other people do. Absolutely do not compare yourself to others. Figure out what lights your spirit. You need to design a life then which doesn't give you much physical and mental disturbance. Find out what are the most important factors on how to feel good and have good life. For instance, my overall biggest value in life is time. For some people it might be money but for me the thing which I value the highest is time. Time to do things I enjoy, things that might not even generate money but things that is meaningful to me and that I find purpose in.
What I prioritise above all is health. Heath comes first. ALWAYS.

Skip this if you like. Boring stuff about me (My dream situation? If I could choose entirely what to do I'd be spending my time writing, reading, exploring great things and meeting interesting people, work from anywhere in the world, I'd also like to make podcasts and youtube videos together with others. I love to communicate and I love to learn. This is what I'd do for the next few years if I could make a plan.
I would love to invest in research and impact businesses. I really wish I had a lot of money so that I could fund all things I find important, like blockchain development, CRISPR technology, research on ending all diseases and ageing, artificial intelligence and Augmented Reality. )

Its your life! Enjoy the little things.

Most important of all, be your own best friend. Talk to yourself like you would talk to your best friend. How do you talk you yourself right now? Do you ever listen carefully to how you treat yourself? Would you treat others you cared about the same way?

But.. What might be the underlying cause of feeling like my friend?

We have to basic emotions. Love and fear. Does stress comes from love? No it branches from fear. False Evidence Appearing Real. But what do we fear?
Not being loved. We fear that we won't be good enough for our partners, family, friends, acquaintances, neighbours, society and ourselves. We fear that we won't be able to buy food and thus we fail to take care of ourselves and we will be "looked down on". We fear the pitiful, sceptic, laughing and disgustful eyes of society when we do something which isn't applicable with the norms and rules of our culture. But it all gets back to love. We are scared of not being loved , not feeling love from people we want to feel love from or just want to be admired. We always want to be the best version possible and compare ourselves to the top elite of the people in society who gets the most admiration and love. That puts us way down before we even start. Not a chance to get up there immediately. Meanwhile we might feel stressed.

But, you are loved! From everyone. It's just an illusion. Next time you feel lonely and insecure and not loved, think about that the other person you are talking about might just feel the exact same. Why not reach out and comfort this person? Make the encounter about the other person, not you! Shift focus, focus on who you are with, not on how you act when you are around people. Put your focus on others!

Don't be the victim. Be the winner. Change your attitude and perspective and you'll forever be content.

How often do you ask yourself this?

  • How often do you feel grateful? When?

  • Do you have meaning that gives you a sense of purpose? When? Why?

  • How often do you smile? When was the last time? Doing what?

  • How often do you laugh? When was the last time? Doing what?

  • When do you truly enjoy yourself?
    • Alone or together with someone? Then who? Where? When? Why?
    • And how often do you do things you really really take pleasure in doing?
  • How often do you feel positive emotions and have healthy thoughts?

  • What are you missing in your life? Why is that so? Is it necessary to miss it? Will you die or someone you know die without it?

  • What are the things you appreciate the most with your life?

  • Are you content with your life? Why? Why not?

  • How is your thought pattern? Beneficial or self destructing? Why?

Enjoy life while being present with the things and people you already have. Feel grateful for it, appreciate it, love it. When you can do that, you'll be content. Never wishing to be somewhere else no matter what situation. You'll feel truly alive.

Errare Humanum Est

#latin
To err is human. It's human to fail. But what does failing really mean anyways? To me, there is no such thing as failing. To me, failing is equivalent of learning experiences.  "I have not failed, I've just found 10.000 ways that don't work". This quote by Thomas Edison represent how we all should interpret the word failure. Learning. To succeed, you definitely have to "fail" on a small or large scale first. Remember, learning to walk takes a lot of falling down for humans. But we keep falling, hurting ourselves because our instinct says we have to make it. There is no other way. So why don't we apply this mindset to our daily life? It would free us from so much inner stress and the feeling of external pressure. We believe we have to be perfect from the very first time we do something new. It's impossible! How is that even possible? When you've never done it before? Everyone knows that you have to practice to get good at something. But why don't we focus more on the journey than on the end goals? There is something wrong with those cultures who do not appreciate, value and accept the failure and flaws of people and companies. This is how people and companies grow and develop. There is no way around that.
"The only time you fail is when you give up". I can agree on that quote.

Week in Review - April 16th

Happy Easter Folks!

I hope you've had a good one. That Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Eve and the days following treated you good and you've gotten the rest you were longing for and that you've eaten bunch of chocolates and eggs.
Since I'm not a christian easter to me is simply associated with time off and candy. And yeh.. next to the white snowy mountains and them never ending cross country hiking trips which I in fact still carry trauma from. This easter was rather tragic due to my infection but I got some time to recover and get ready for the new project I'm about to enter.
I was alone this whole week and it got me thinking that the people whom already feel lonely must feel worse in easter, all isolated and lonesome just like christmas. I wish I had a big house and could invite lots of people for a big party, then I do not mean friends but friends I don't yet know, the people who might feel extra lonely. Thats a goal at some point in my life. Be able to open up my home at christmas, easter and thanksgiving.

Want an easter fun fact? Norwegians eat the double amount of eggs in easter than what we normally do. Actually 4,6 million eggs everyday and 30 million in total. 5 million people and we eat so much during a week... Insane? I don't eat eggs at all, so there must be some people out there that eats aaaa lot.
Another thing I find funny is that basically Jesus "dies" on different dates every year. That should not make sense for deeply religious people? Should it?

Also notable to mention; It was Leonardo Da Vincis birthday yesterday, 15th of April. One of my all time idols because of his polymathic and creative personality. He was just a true genius, next to Nikola Tesla of course.
An additional fun fact to that, the Titanic sank that day too.. what a date.

What did you do this easter ?

Well, to the point, my weekly week in review, which I missed last Sunday due to my feverish body and mental state..

PS: If there is one thing you should do week it is to join in 22nd of April and march for science with the rest of the world! There will be a march in about every big city, I'm sure you care for the planet, the people you love and yourself, so then this is definitely worth marching for or at least give it a kind thought. I recently wrote a blogpost on this, check it out here if you like.

SPACE

At NASAs press conference this Thursday they revealed the findings of that Saturns Moon has the ingredients necessary for a habitable environment, the organic chemicals—carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sulfur—which are the basic building blocks of life. Perhaps this is our next stop after Mars?

We will be able to build rockets going in the speed of light or 99,9999 %, science shows, sadly it won't happen yet, we have to wait for AI to be supersmart to make it a reality. A professor has proposed a mathematical theory that could allow us to one day build a photon rocket that can reach at 99.999 percent of the speed of light.

The space elevator(yes you heard me!)which you see below in this video is to be built by the Chinese company, Obayashi Corporation within 2050. Exciting! Perhaps every country will have one like this in a hundred of years, to have an easy way to enter space and also grow our food there. What do you think?

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE #FUTURE SOCIETY

Canada just did a genius move, which I wish all countries did just right away.

Last week a non-profit Vector Institute launched designed to accelerate research and commercialization of AI and machine learning technology. The federal and provincial governments have pledged 150 million Canadian dollars (about $110 million), and a group of 31 corporate donors will also support the hub’s work over the next 10 years.

HEALTH & MEDICINE

One single drop of blod can now detect several types of cancer. Accurate rate 71-96 %.

EARTH & ENERGY

#CLEANWATER

Here is a cool company, Waterseer.  This turbine allow you to condense water directly from thin air. Give this to everyone please and also a charity water drill. Watch the video below.

#FOOD

Have a look at how our kitchen and food habits will look like in 2025 and beyond.
3D printing, robot chefs, foods form space and best of all nooo more killing innocent animals!

TRANSPORTATION

Electronic Jets may soon be an option.

Elon Musk just announced that a Semi Truck in the making and will be released this September He mentioned that a convertible roadster and a pickup truck that will be on market in just 18 to 24 months.

Musk also announced the released date of Tesla Model 3. It's 3rd of July folks! I guess load of Norwegians signed up already. We buy a lot because we get it cheaper than the actual prize. The government sponsor us. Beat that! So number 1 car to buy here.

LIFE SCIENCES
#computing

Scientists Hacked a Cell’s DNA and Made a Biocomputer Out of It.
Our brains are often compared to computers, but in truth, the billions of cells in our bodies may be a better analogy.

VR/AR

Electrodes for Your Face Bring Your Emotions to Augmented and Virtual Reality
We want it to become as real as possible, and when it is, we won't be able to distinguish it, so now we got a step closer with mapping the face. This tracking makes it easier for users to express emotions and and interact with each other.

ROBOTICS

Revolutionary ? Yes indeed. These robots are sorting 200,000 packages, operating 24/7. Humans.. beat that!?

LIFE HACKS

Google released a new AI, AutoDraw this week. What a relief! The tool uses machine learning to guess what you’re trying to draw and then gives you the option to replace your bad drawing with more polished ones. Now everyone can easily and quickly draw understandable drawings.
Good for powerpoint and visual explaining youtube videos.
Google also launched Areo in India this week which seems very handy.

SINGULARITY HUB'S PICK OF THE WEEK

Big Things Have Small Beginnings

Yes indeed, all big things have small beginnings. Do you know what matters? Action, belief and where you end up. If you're fortunate enough to have a smartphone and/or a computer pluss wifi, you can basically do anything today. All you have to do is start and continue while in hard times. It's easy to look at things from the successful perspective and not looking at what's behind it. Many believe that successful people and companies have always been so but that's not the truth. Struggle, hard work and a few bare hands lies behind it. It wasn't perfect from the start. One great example is Tim Ferriss book "Four hour work week". It was denied by 26 publishers but he didn't give up, he believed so much in his story that he was determined to get it out to the world. The 27th company agreed to publish it. Imagine if he gave up? He wouldn't have had the enormous success he has today, possibly. Don't forget about this. All you have to do is believe and take action.

Eggsquisite Easter :))

Wish I could say so while adding a picture of my beautiful raw vegan chocolate egg . Well, I can't. This Easter has been a rather sad one, dominated by a heavy virus refusing to leave. I wish antibiotics could kill these types of organisms but turns out it can't. I simply have to wait for it to leave. The problem, it never does. It's been nagging around turning the fever on and off since 10th of March. Can you believe it? More than a month! Luckily according to blood tests it is leaving though, but slowly. My doctor says its been this crazy virus going around town this year putting many people down for weeks even months. I'm certain I got it from the hospital I worked at for a bit, you see I haven't been ill like this since I was down with lumonia at the age of 13-14. It's not fun. What do I have to do for you dear immune cells to help you fight this virus? And virus, what do I have to do to make you leave? You're not invited anymore. Or.. you are invited as long as you don't ruin my health. I'm starting this new job on Tuesday so I do have to get better. do you hear me? Please help.. I think I'll just lay in my bed, sleep and eat vegetables for the rest of the Easter Holiday. Watching photos from family and friends having fun at the mountains certainly doesn't help. But there is nothing I can do.

Hope you guys are having a better Easter Celebration than me!

Wish you all a happy one!

Nothing Beats The Awesomeness of Science

#MaterialScience
One of the industries I think Norway should start focusing on since the oil industry is going down any minute is definitely material science. We have a bunch of talented engineers in this country that could adapt to this field. Yes, of course knowledge and skills within Sustainability, AI, AR, Blockchain and Biotech is highly important but I think Norway has a good shot on becoming really talented material scientists and perhaps make a living form it. When you can manipulate matter you can do anything.

Must Watch TV-Series

Hashem Al-Ghaili is a person I've been following for a few years because of his knowledge on future society. Now he has made his own TV show "2070 Edge of Science" where he takes us deeper into the field. Sign up and you'll receive the first episode

If you have The Nathional Geographic channel you are extremely lucky. Year Million just started airing and I'm dying to watch it. If anyone of you know how I can watch it without being in the US let me know!

Another must watch show is Jason Silva's new TV series on Nathional Geographic called "Origin". Jason Silva is a futurist, public speaker and filmmaker. I first started to follow him when I came across his YouTube Channel "Shots of Awe".
Check the TV-series out here

There is also another channel you definitely should check out and it is Curiosity Stream which Michiu Kaku is behind. It discuss all of the interesting things happening in science.

If you haven't checked out Black Mirror yet, you definitely should. It's fiction but it's not to far away from whats to become our reality.

When You Have A House But No One's Home

Have you ever had that feeling of your brain being empty? That your head is just an endless fog? That thinking almost isn’t any option? That you try to think but, its nothing there, no words, no logic, no thoughts, no visuals, just pure nothingness?
Let me tell you, its not a comfortable self boosting feeling. It rather starts touching the button of self doubt and self worth. Yes we all go through various fases in our head, but I think having a well-functionfing brain is crucial for well being, a brain which works like its drugged down and also with dementia might be one of the worst states and what am I without my thoughts? Identity; gone, feeling of self; gone. Self-destructed, yes. You have a house but no one is home.
Going to work in this state is rather difficult, am I of value? Do I even have anything to add to the table?

I guess we all go through weird times in our lives where we not feel as ourselves. It's certainly not fun but I guess its an interesting experience to have, necessary perhaps. And I know a worse state of mind is a self-destructing one with negative patterns, high speed mental craziness. A mind that tortures you for every action you do! When you can not relax, and you feel so stressed that you can even feel your cells being stressed too. That is worse. When your mind become a prison. A prison you can not escape.

Grace. Gratitude.

What helps in these kinds of states is to push yourself to do stuff even though you don't want to. Read, write, solve math problems, talk to people, something just to force you to think hard.
It might be difficult to begin with, but believe me, it will help you moving forwards.
